HUNTWe don't do any real hunting since we grow and raise our own food but our dogs love to track and tree. They will let you know there is something in the bush and wait for instructions to flush. We have placed many dogs that have reported to be perfect for woodland hunting by their owners. The traits are still strong and show up early. I love to watch the young pups pick up a ground scent and then their little tails signal alert as they go round and round or back and forth to find the trail! We pity the poor cat or kitten when pups get them treed. They will keep it up there yipping and yapping until the rescuerer arrives. And of course, the adult dogs do a lot of their own hunting around here.

HERDOur English Shepherds love to work with the stock animals and move them from one location to another even culling a single animal from the herd if needed. They make sure the flocks are in their proper places at night. They will watch over weak or injured animals or keep the herd at bay while fence repairs or vet work is being taken care of. We have placed dogs that do everything our dogs do PLUS, load hogs or team drive large herds. They have the instincts and skills they just need the right pack leader and environment to be the Super Stars of Herding.

GUARDOur English Shepherds keep the Farm safe. They alert us by barking when strangers arrive or of unusual activity. Here, they have spotted Red Tailed Hawks flying above and know they can be a danger to their poultry or rabbits. They will keep watch until they are sure danger has passed. I have seen them, many the times, get up on their back legs and hop up toward the sky to warn the predators away. They are smart, smart, smart.
You want your dogs to alert when someone arrives at your place but will immediately hush down when you tell them its OK. Our dogs let us know what is going on all around the farm, day and night. A rooster fight, a rabbit is loose, a possum is in the tree, a fox is trying to sneak up behind the compost pile or if a snapping turtle has a goose by the foot, down in the pond. I could go on and on about what these dogs know and do. You can tell by their bark tone how serious the situation is and react accordingly. If my dogs tell me there is a coon at the hen house, I let another dog out the back door and that is taken care of. They will let me know if they need me to come and help! |
